What is it? Family therapy is simply the practice of Psychotherapy/Counselling at family level. This involves looking at relationships within the family and how individuals respond to their family dynamic. The goal of family therapy is to unify and assist healing of the family in a supportive way. Who needs it? Any family which is not functioning in a healthy way. Often families are in a crisis because someone within the family is “acting out”. This does not mean that the person “acting out” is the target for therapy. In fact most of the time all members of the family need to make behavioural changes. Family therapy is also for families who have experienced a death or trauma and need support. How does it work? Sometimes I work with the family as a group, with everyone at the session. At other times I work separately with an individual or the parents from the family. Adolescents and young children are usually included in family therapy. Not all members of the family need to be at the session in order for family therapy to occur. |
