What is Psychotherapy? What’s Counselling? And what’s the difference? Psychotherapy is deep internal work at the unconscious level. Often clients are uncovering and dealing with things they didn’t know or understand about themselves.Counselling is working at the conscious level. In other words, the client may know what the issue is but is unable to solve it. Psychotherapy and Counselling often overlap in a session which is why practitioners might describe themselves as both a Psychotherapist and a Counsellor. Who needs it? Psychotherapy and Counselling is for anyone who is ready for change and would like some professional help to achieve it. Some people think that if you seek psychotherapy or counselling then you mustn’t be able to handle problems on your own and that you are weak. In fact the opposite is true: it takes intelligence and insight to recognise that professional help is necessary, and courage to seek it. Psychotherapy/Counselling can be helpful if you are suffering from a mental illness such as depression, psychosis, eating disorders etc. It can help if you are experiencing problems in your relationship with others, or you’d like to get rid of negative life patterns. This work is for individuals, couples, families and any other combination of people. |
